The Hydra deck was a very interesting take on Magic, and I was lucky enough to be able to purchase one to use to play with during the event and any time after.
But this post isn't about that part of the event. This is about Game Day.
Every Game Day, I take an event deck, modify it, and then play it, and I always seem to wind up doing well with it. This time, I came in 2nd (the third game of the Top 2 match came very close with 8 life and 5 life.)
Anyway, let's look at the actual deck of the Theros Event Deck, and then my modifications.

So the first round I played, I went against a Black/Red/Green deck (which I'm still not quite sure the purpose) and I swept against that. Opponent was a kid I've helped with decks and talked through Magic history with (explaining storylines and such)
Second round, I went against Mono Black Devotion (with some splashed white in the sideboard). I got destroyed by that deck. More on that later. Opponent was a friend of mine with awesome deck builds, and one of the better players at the local store.
Third round, I went against Bant Hexproof Enchantments (One game I almost lost if not for a Detention Sphere targeting Ethereal Armor). I swept that match. Opponent was another of the better players at the store.
So, I get seeded 7 in the top 8 as a result (15 players). Seed 2 is none other than Mono Black Devotion. Rematch time! I won that 2-1 because he got some bad draws in game two and three. On to Top 4.
My Top 4 match was against a Boros aggro deck. I swept that match too. Opponent was a kid who, while had a good deck, made some bad plays. Boros Charm could have eliminated some of my board, but was instead used to take down 4 life after I was using lifegain.
Top 2 Match was against Mono Blue Aggro, and yes, this is a thing. Think Master of Waves, Nightveil Specter, Thassa, and assorted other cards, this was pretty difficult. Opponent is one of the better players in the store as well, but he hadn't been around lately. I lost 1-2, but still walked away with store credit.
Honestly, there were some things I could have done (like used Judge's Familiar from RTR and duplicats of other cards, buti think I did pretty well considering I just changed only 6 cards in the entire deck. But Daxos of Meletis is very powerful, and both Detention Sphere and Lavinia of the Tenth have saved me many times on Game Day. Definitely a good deck, worth buying and modifying with other White/Blue cards that could benefit you.
