Okay, here we go... This deck was quickly/roughly made over a period of 3 hours. It features one of our newest legendary creatures, Brimaz, King of Oreskos.

Honestly, I find single color decks to be difficult to build for Commander/EDH. In theory, you have so much to pull from, but when it comes to building it, you'll look and say "I want this to be unblockable" and remember that unblockable/"can't be blocked" belongs to blue, or "I want this to be hexproof" and you remember that hexproof belongs to blue or green. Artifacts fill the gaps in some cases, but it still is quite difficult to do single color decks. I think considering what I was trying to accomplish, I believe I did quite well.

Cats in Magic is not a very large demographic, but there are still many cards with that subtype, and narrowing down to just white creatures, you still have many. One cool thing about them is that there are several with lifelink, so let's do a white lifegain deck? The only regular creature that isn't a cat subtype is Archangel of Thune. I mean, why not boost everything with all the life you gain? So that's what this does.

Ajani's Sunstriker  Archangel of Thune  Trained Caracal

We also have some token generating going on, so we need things to help that along. Brimaz, Ajani's Pridemate, and Ajani, Caller of the Pride put tokens on the field, but that's not all, so how are we going to boost these tokens? Spear of Heliod and Intangible Virtue, of course!

Intangible Virtue  Spear of Heliod

And if +1/+1 counters and super life gain doesn't finish the job for you with your multitude of cats, we have another solution: White Devotion, through Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx resulting in some very nasty Eldrazi.

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth  Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre

With all of the possibilities in this mono-white deck, you should be able to do well, I believe. It's definitely an interesting build.

Brewing with Kiora

As all followers of spoiler season know, this is our newest planeswalker: Kiora, the Crashing Wave. So for 4 mana, we have a planeswalker with a starting loyalty of 2. So what are we going to do with her in Standard, espcially now that we know all cards from Born of the Gods? Here's an idea:

Creatures

x4 Cloudfin Raptor
x4 Frilled Oculus
x2 Kiora's Follower
x2 Courser of Kruphix
x4 Drakewing Krasis
x2 Vorel of the Hull Clade
x2 Prophet of Kruphix
x2 Giant Adephage

Land

x4 Breeding Pool
x4 Temple of Mystery
x8 Island
x4 Forest

Artifacts

x2 Astral Cornucopia

Planeswalkers

x2 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
x2 Jace, Architect of Though

Other Spells

x4 Alpha Authority
x4 Simic Charm
x4 Syncopate

I started this post a long time ago when Kiora was first revealed, and then I tried to finish/modify to include more Born of the Gods cards, so it may not turn out as good as I'd like, but we can Attack with a 6/8 Cloudfin Raptor on turn 4 or play a Giant Adephage on turn 5. Well, let's walk you through how this works...

Cloudfin Raptor  Frilled Oculus

So, the obvious goal is start with a Cloudfin Raptor. Flying and Evolve, but only a 0/1. We'll fix that turn 2 with either a Frilled Oculus or Kiora's Follower. It's now a 1/2 for attacking in the air with. Make it bigger next turn with either another Frilled Oculus, Kiora's Follower, or a 3-drop of either Vorel, Drakewing Krasis, or Courser of Kruphix. You can now play lands from the top of your library if you aren't drawing what you need. Hopefully by turn 4, we can put down a Kiora to help protect your creatures or else drop an Alpha Authority on your lone Cloudfin Raptor. By turn 5, we want a Prophet of Kruphix so we can keep untapping creatures and lands and then cast cards with flash.

  Vorel of the Hull Clade

So, while researching this deck, I found a way to make Astral Cornucopia so much better, which is why I added it. Plus, we need ramp for a Giant Adephage to start swinging, and I figured we could use all the help we can get. So, we can either play Astral Cornucopia where X is 1 or where X is 2 (it will be that much later for X to equal 2, but it works better). Anyway, Vorel of the Hull Clade doubles the number of counters you have on a creature, land, or artifact. It's not just for making a 3/4 Cloudfin Raptor a 6/8 on turn 4, but it's for making Astral Cornucopia have 2 counters on turn 4. How? Well, Cast Astral Cornucopia with X=1, and then tap it choosing a single color, and either pay the second color with a land, or else tap Kiora's Follower and untap Astral Cornucopia to add the second color, then tap Vorel to double the counters. Turn 5, we can have more fun. Tap Vorel paying 2, make Astral Cornucopia have 4 mana, then untap Vorel and tap 2 more lands to make it tap for 8. So ideally, you can create 8 mana from Astral Cornucopia on Turn 5. So we'll just have ourselves a Turn 5 Giant Adephage.

Simic Charm  Jace, Architect of Thought

Simic Charm is just for countering creatures, boosting your creatures, or protecting your creatures, and Syncopate is just there to counter anything your opponent sends at you. Jace, Architect of Thought gets you cards and protects Kiora because of his +1 ability.

Giant Adephage  Alpha Authority

So with this deck, we've created a sweet combo with Astral Cornucopia, Vorel of the Hull Clade, and Kiora's Follower, we've utilized Kiora (to help us along), and we've started swinging with a Giant Adephage on Turn 6 either as a 7/7 or we've used a Simic Charm to make him a 10/10 (add in an Alpha Authority and it can't be touched by anyone wishing to exile it and can only be blocked by one creature allowing more damage to trample through.

Born of the Gods Spoilers Part 10

Good, good... Of course, there isn't any playing multiple lands per turn, you just get to play it if it is a land and you haven't played a land yet. This card is a bit psychological too, meaning you can play mind games with your opponent. Say on Turn 10 you're playing green and any non-blue color deck. Keep playing lands from your library as they show up keeping like 4 or 5 in your hand, so you keep having these lands, but they don't know what you're going to do, except it's just land and you're bluffing. Just keep a good poker face...

Love it, love it, love it. It's already a 1/1, but chances are you have more creatures and enchantments. This will be a good White Weenies deck or Boros tokens deck. I mean, why not? You have the creatures, you'll have a few Auras (yeah, no global Enchantments guys... Gods are creatures when their devotion is high enough, but only if it is kept above the threshold number. After that, they're only a global enchantment, not an Aura.).

Costly, but if you ramp or the game lasts a while, you have a creature that is indestructible AND you can scry 2 if it's your turn. So, this is Modern and Legacy good. Dredge. Cast this, bring back any giant thing you dropped. And if you can do a turn 1 Griselbrand in Legacy, I'm sure there has got to be a good use for this in other formats, if not Commander.

Divination

Reprint. Good, I guess, but I'm not a big draw and/or discard cards kind of guy. Plus, this is in M14. Cool art, but it was printed less than a year ago...

Thunderous Might

Love it. Promotes red devotion and you get big stuff hitting your opponent. Couple it with any stuff that was released that I said would be good for Red Deck Wins and you're good.

One last time... Spoiler List is full and complete. Please enjoy some shenanigans with the new cards on Monday. Until then!

Born of the Gods Spoilers Part 9

A reprint! Last time we saw this we were in Scars of Mirrodin, and then it showed up in the Venser vs. Koth Dual Deck. Perfect for this block, of course.

Another candidate for Red Deck Wins. Or, you know, mix it with Searing Blood. Take out two creatures and hit your opponent all on turn 3. Think of it like this:

Turn 1: Mountain & Blistercoil Weird
Turn 2: Mountain & Satyr Firedancer
Turn 3: Mountain, Searing Blood, and Shock. Blistercoil attacks for 3, 5 damage to opponent, and an X/2 and X/3 creature are also now dead.
Turn 4: Do it again, or something like.
Turn 5: Finish the game.

See? Easy.

Wizards likens this to a better Gilded Lotus. That is 5 mana for a Tap for 3 mana of any one color. This time, you'd need to pay 9 mana, but each one could be different. More for EDH if you ask me, but maybe there's something in Standard for it. Easiest to pull off is X=2 so you only pay 6. But... still that's a bit much. Judge for yourself, but I don't see the purpose of using this.

As always, spoiler list.

Born of the Gods Spoilers Part 8

So, we have a lot to go over today! We have new cards, a new cycle of enchantment creatures, and the tokens. Let's take a look:

4 mana for a hasty 3/1 which either gets +2/+2 or you can cast an instant or sorcery for free. I'm already getting ideas for Red Deck Wins here... Either they can get hit with a hasty 5/3 or they can get hit with a hasty 3/1 and also get walloped by a Searing Blood on turn 4. Also knocks out that possible blocker that may kill your Oracle of Bones. Yep, looking good.

2 mana for a 1/3 with Heroic that lets you grab an enchantment card from the top three cards of your library. I think I have a deck that could use this, but it needs more work... Spoilers are looking good...

Alright, so we've seen Nyxborn Shieldmate. It's nice. Bestow is a bit much, but that's for late game anyway. It's a one-drop, so it fits as a nice turn one play. Same with Nyxborn Rollicker, but a little better. Play one turn one, use a second to bestow on turn two. But not as amazingly wonderful. Nyxborn Eidolon is also good. Nyxborn Wolf and Nyxborn Triton I'm not as happy about because they are turn 3 plays that bestow on turn 5. By turn 3, you probably want some creatures large enough to stick around longer than a quick hit. Sure burn takes out all of these, and they aren't too special, but Nyxborn Shieldmate and Nyxborn Rollicker are more likely to be used than by me than any of these others. But judge them for yourself, don't just take my word for it.

Token time!

Hey, this might be the first time a token has been not just for creatures. But... I did this before Wizards. Hate to brag, but about a year ago, I was working on my own Magic set (using Magic Set Editor) and I did a Minecraft set, where you could get Artifact (or "Item") tokens that could be sacrificed for something. I went with a Golden Apple that could be sacrificed for 5 life. Anyway... SOMETHING gives us Gold artifact tokens that sacrifice for any one color of mana. I can't wait to find out what...

We also don't yet know what creates the White bird tokens...

Anyway, I like the look of the enchantment creature tokens (and we have one in each color!) and I look forward to using them. Oh, hey, Wizards, if you're reading this, it'd be cool if you dropped in maybe a foil token or two in the token slot once per booster box. It'd be kinda cool to see these in foil. Okay, I admit it, I want to see everything in foil, but that won't happen I guess...

Spoilers List in the event you want to see all the puzzle pieces we've patched together so far...
